FARMING THE FUTURE

Pioneering sustainable farming in Melton Mowbray, our patented aquaponic system turns fish waste into plant nutrition, producing year-round fresh greens.

Circular System

Nothing wasted, everything reused.

Year Round Supply

Consistent greens in every season.

Local & Fresh

Lower miles, lighter footprint.

Resource Efficient

Using less land, energy and inputs.

Fresh, Local, Responsible.

At Iris Produce we farm fish and plants together in a closed loop Aquaponics system. Fish provide natural nutrients for our crops. Plants return clean water back to the fish, completing the cycle.

We grow lettuce, herbs, and leafy greens on floating rafts inside modern polytunnels. The result is fresh, flavourful produce all year round, grown without pesticides.

Our approach uses a fraction of the water of traditional farming, produces minimal waste and cuts food miles by growing locally. It is a clean, sustainable way of farming designed with the future in mind.

How It Works

Fish, plants and a little innovation working in perfect balance.

Step 1

Fish Production

Our high welfare Trout provide natural nutrients as part of their normal growth cycle.

Step 2

Waste Capture

Solid waste is collected and separated to keep the system clean.

Step 3

Nutrient Processing

Beneficial bacteria convert the waste into natural, plant available nutrients.

Step 4

Crop Production

Nutrients fuel plant growth, and the water is returned clean to the fish.

What We Do

What does our system deliver? The results speak for themselves.

Fresh, Local Produce

We grow lettuce, herbs and leafy greens on deep water culture rafts inside modern polytunnels, producing reliable crops in all conditions.

Consistent, fresh produce harvested year-round with excellent flavour and shelf life.

  • Reliable harvests every month of the year
  • Longer shelf life compared to imports
  • Fresh produce harvested to order daily
  • Reduced food miles through local supply

High Welfare Trout

Trout raised to high welfare standards provide natural nutrients for our plants. In return, the crops help purify the water, creating a balanced and healthy cycle.

Fish and plants thriving together in a closed-loop system.

  • Trout provide a renewable nutrient source
  • High standards of animal welfare maintained
  • Balanced cycle linking fish and plants
  • Fully traceable from tank to harvest

Closed-Loop Cycle

Fish waste is captured, filtered, and processed by beneficial bacteria into safe, plant-ready nutrition. This circular process ensures nothing is wasted and water stays clean.

Waste transformed into value through natural recycling.

  • Fish waste recycled into plant nutrition
  • Beneficial microbes maintain water quality
  • Clean water is continually returned to fish
  • Nutrients used more efficiently than in soil

Resource Efficient

Our farms use far less water and inputs than conventional farming. Recycling and precision dosing maximise efficiency, while achieving high yields per square metre.

Using 90% less water while maintaining high productivity.

  • Dramatically lower water use per plant
  • Reduced dependence on fertilisers
  • High yields in compact growing space
  • Lower environmental impact across production

Energy Smart

Built with the future in mind, our farms are designed to work with solar, CHP, and waste-heat recovery. This cuts costs, lowers carbon, and makes production more resilient.

Renewable-ready design that keeps farming efficient and low-carbon.

  • Lower long-term operating and energy costs
  • Reduced carbon footprint with every harvest
  • Compatible with solar, CHP, and waste heat
  • Resilient to rising energy prices and supply risks

Good to Know

Looking for clarity? These are the answers we’re asked for most.

What is aquaponics and how does it work?

Aquaponics combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (growing plants in water). Nutrient-rich water from the fish feeds the plants, and the plants return clean water back to the fish — creating a closed-loop cycle.
